Joe Abercrombie is a British fantasy author and one of the defining authors of modern grimdark fantasy. He is best known for the First Law world, which runs from the original First Law trilogy beginning with The Blade Itself (2006) through the standalone novels Best Served Cold, The Heroes, and Red Country and on into the later Age of Madness trilogy.
Leonid Andreyev (1871-1919) was a Russian writer from Oryol who worked as a court reporter before Maxim Gorky encouraged his fiction. He became one of the most famous writers in Russia with dark, intense work like The Red Laugh, The Seven Who Were Hanged, and the play He Who Gets Slapped, and his 1906 story "Lazarus" is an early classic of cosmic horror. He opposed the Bolsheviks and died in Finland in 1919.
Paolo Bacigalupi (born 1972) is an American science fiction writer from Paonia, Colorado, whose fiction and essays have appeared in High Country News. His stories and novels imagine futures remade by corporations and environmental collapse, including the collection Pump Six and Other Stories, the Hugo- and Nebula-winning The Windup Girl, Ship Breaker, and The Water Knife.
Iain Banks (1954-2013) was a critically acclaimed Scottish author who achieved widespread success writing mainstream contemporary fiction under his own name and groundbreaking space opera science fiction as Iain M. Banks. He's Todd's favorite science fiction author.
S.A. Barnes is the horror pen name of author Stacey Kade. Writing as Barnes, she publishes deep-space horror with Tor Nightfire, including Dead Silence, Ghost Station, and Cold Eternity.
Octavia E. Butler (1947-2006) was a pioneering American science fiction writer, the first Black woman to win wide recognition in the genre and a MacArthur Fellow, known for Kindred, the Earthseed (Parable) novels, and the Patternist and Xenogenesis series.

Robert A. Heinlein (1907-1988) was an American science fiction writer and former naval officer, often grouped with Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke as the genre's big three. He is best known for Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land, and The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, and for short fiction like "All You Zombies," and in 1974 he became the first Grand Master of the Science Fiction Writers of America.
Aldous Huxley (1894-1963) was an English writer and philosopher, the author of nearly fifty books and a nine-time Nobel Prize in Literature nominee. He is best known for Brave New World (1932), the dystopia he wrote in four months as a send-up of H.G. Wells, and for The Doors of Perception (1954), his account of taking mescaline, which later gave the rock band The Doors their name.

He is best known for the Revelation Space novels and House of Suns, and for short fiction like "Zima Blue" and "Beyond the Aquila Rift," both adapted for Netflix's Love, Death & Robots.
K.X. Song is a diaspora fantasy author with roots in Hong Kong and Shanghai, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her adult fantasy debut, The Night Ends with Fire, opens The Dragon Spirit Duology; she also writes young-adult fiction, including An Echo in the City.
